EAST LANSING, MI – The highly anticipated 2026-27 Michigan State men's basketball season officially commences today, October 2, 2026, as the Spartans host the University of the Incarnate Word for their exhibition opener. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET at the iconic Breslin Center, with live coverage available for fans on B1G+.
This initial contest serves as a critical first look at Coach Tom Izzo's squad as they aim to improve upon an impressive 27-8 overall record from the previous campaign, which culminated in a Sweet Sixteen run. While exhibition games are not typically factored into official standings, they provide invaluable opportunities for teams to fine-tune their strategies and integrate new talent before the rigors of the regular season begin.
A core reason for optimism among the Spartan faithful is the return of key veteran talent. Senior point guard Jeremy Fears Jr. is back to lead the offense, bringing his experience and playmaking ability to the forefront. Alongside him, senior forward Coen Carr’s athleticism and defensive prowess will be crucial in the paint, anchoring what is expected to be another formidable Michigan State lineup.
